UCI Denies Rescheduling Giro d'Italia to Late May

The UCI has refuted reports that the 2020 Giro d'Italia may be rescheduled to start in late May.

In an opinion article (opens in new tab), Dutch journalist Raymond Kerkhofs "confirmed that the RCS is already working very carefully with local Italian authorities on plans to start the Giro d'Italia on Friday, May 29," and that the three-week He wrote that the race would take place entirely in Italy and that the "Grande Partenza" in Budapest would be moved to 2021.

Kerkhofs wrote that this was to give Italy an incentive to "resume normal life" after being shut down by the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The UCI "wishes to clarify its position with regard to the dates and duration of the 2020 Giro d'Italia, following comments made by President David Lapartier and inaccurately reported by certain media outlets in relation to the impact of the coronavirus on the cycling season."

Earlier Wednesday, UCI President Lapartier told France TV Sport, "We are working with the organizer, RCS, to find a place to hold the Giro in the fall, without a doubt." [After a meeting of officials representing the UCI, race organizers (AIOCC), teams (AIGCP), and riders (CPA), the UCI may relax the rules to allow more World Tour events to overlap and extend the road calendar to November 1, La Partiente said.

However, the UCI stressed in a press release that the Grand Tour would not remove existing events from their allotted dates.

"In line with the principles adopted by the entire cycling family, the Grand Tours will be given priority in the calendar revision after the events already on the calendar as of the resumption date. At this stage, no decisions have been made regarding the redistribution of dates or the format of related events.

"In the spirit of cooperation and solidarity between all parties involved, new discussions will eventually take place between the UCI and the parties concerned in this regard. No further comment will be made at this stage."
