Road racing world champion Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) said she feels "aimless" and "unplanned" after returning to her native Netherlands earlier this week after completing a training camp in Spain ahead of the closure due to the coronavirus.
Van Vleuten told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad that he is feeling less motivated because professional cycling races will be closed for at least the next month.
"The pressure is off this week and next," she said in a video call with AD.nl on Wednesday. 'The pressure is off this week and next week. After that I'm trying to come up with a good plan, but until then it's a little aimless and unplanned."
"It's good to think that the Olympics are going to happen and to have that as a goal, but we also have to remember that it could be postponed. The Olympics will not be canceled. That's for sure," he said, representing the hopes of sports fans.
Van Vleuten was able to slip out of her hotel on Mount Teide in Tenerife, her training camp, before the Spanish blockade earlier this week.
She told the newspaper that it felt strange to leave the supposed safety and quiet of Tenerife and have to return to the Netherlands on a plane full of other passengers.
"I've had my head in the sand for a while," admitted Van Vleuten, who won the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on February 29, the only race before the sport was shut down in 2020. My goal now is to keep a certain kind of shape. I just haven't quite figured out what it is that I'm keeping that shape for."
