The Movistar (opens in new tab) team has released a documentary series on Netflix that tells the story of Richard Carapaz's Giro d'Italia victory and the tension between Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa in the Tour de France. (Open in new tab)
Produced by Telefonica, the parent company of the title sponsor, the six-part series will follow the Spanish team throughout the 2019 season. Titled "El Dia Menos Pensado" (The Most Unexpected Day), it will offer "an in-depth story with unprecedented access," according to the team.
Filmed over eight months in various locations throughout Europe and Latin America, from the team's headquarters in Pamplona (Spain) to the far reaches of Ecuador's northern Calci province, "The Least Expected Day" brings the camera into the daily activities of the Movistar team to capture the emotions and reactions of its key members. and reactions," reads a promo from the team.
"The blue outfit opened its doors to Telefónica with pre-race meetings in the team bus, hotel rooms during massages, breakfast and dinner, and of course, the team car where all shots are called during the most important events of the cycling season."
The series focuses on three Grand Tours, beginning with Calapaz's victory at the Giro d'Italia in May. In the Tour de France, race strategy was confused and chaotic due to the presence of two leaders, Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa.
World champion Alejandro Valverde said at the beginning of Episode 4, "If they don't work out their differences, we will have problems," and the documentary focuses on tensions and communication problems, especially Quintana's dropout while Movistar's peloton s lead in the infamous stage to the Col du Tourmalet, where Movistar continued to run hard.
The series then moved on to the Vuelta a España, where Quintana this time shared the lead with Alejandro Valverde, who finished second overall.
