LAPARTIEN ON ROAD CALENDAR: Discussions underway with riders and teams to find best solution

According to UCI President David Lapartient, the UCI, the governing body of cycling, has been working closely with teams, riders, and race organizers to ensure that with most spring races postponed and other races potentially moved due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the sport's biggest They are designing a new professional road racing calendar that could incorporate some of the events.

In a Facebook message to the cycling community, Lapartiento also said that the UCI is working closely with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to clarify the qualifying process for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"It is a wise decision and we support the decision of the International Olympic Committee," Lapartiento said of the postponement of the Games announced last week.

"We are working with them on a daily basis to assess the impact on athlete eligibility, preparation, and the upcoming calendar, especially for 2021. We can expect the UCI to engage in constructive dialogue with the IOC during this difficult time."

La Partiente reiterated that the coronavirus outbreak has left many athletes around the world in confinement and only allowed to train indoors with home trainers. When will they be able to train normally again?

"We are also working on a road cycling calendar, but this is not easy," Lapartiento said.

"We have begun discussions with the teams, organizers, and of course the riders. We intend to find the best solution by setting a date for the resumption of the season without extending it beyond what is reasonable.

"We will strive to preserve the richness of the sport - and of course, in road cycling, the Grand Tours and the monuments - for both men and women. 15]

"We will strive to find the best solutions and rebuild a solid calendar towards the end of the season so we can rediscover the passion we love.

However, La Partiente noted that the priority remains "the protection of the residents, respect for the rules, and ensuring that the crisis does not spread further."

"So we can hope that the UCI will do its work during this period and quickly launch a calendar project that will allow us to rediscover our favorite sport for the second half of the season," he said.
