While strong teams win and lose in this sport, only the winners are usually feted and celebrated.
Cycling News' Domestique Week would like to congratulate the "great losers," as Lithuanian filmmaker Arunas Matelis called them in his excellent documentary.
To elect the best domestique in the current men's peloton, Cycling News readers, riders, and teams voted on Twitter.
We will select 16 candidates and vote daily on Twitter for the most admired domestiques to advance to the final vote later in the week, and all 16 deserve their spot because of the support work they do every day in the saddle, or the special distinction they make for their leaders and teams due to their efforts.
Perhaps the winner will get a special bonus from their team or sponsor. They will no doubt be crowned "the best domestique in the world.
We also invite you to share your thoughts on social media and in the comments section below each Domestique Week story. We have created the #CNBestDomestique hashtag so everyone can follow, comment and share their votes for the week.
There are several types of domestiques and we have divided the riders into four categories: classic mainstays, important sprint support such as lead-out men, Grand Tour domestiques and the likes of Adam Hansen (Lotto-Soudal) and unique and versatile workers like Alex Howes (EF Pro Cycling).
To participate in this poll and show your support, go to Twitter and select the riders you wish to vote for. In the early rounds, four riders will be voted on, with the best two advancing to the next round. After the Cycling News Domestic Week, two riders will be selected for the final vote.
