After a week of voting during Cyclingnews Domestique Week, Mikhail Morkov (Deceuninck-Quickstep) and Mikkel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott) are now in the running for the title of Cyclingnews' "World's Best Domestique" in the final They faced off in the Twitter poll.
The duo won the opening round and then each won their respective semifinals to advance to the final.
Morkov was part of the domestique with the best sprint support and lead-out group, winning the semifinals with 43.2% of the vote over Tony Martin (Jumbo Visma), Tim Declercq (Detuninck Quickstep), and Daniel Os (Bora-Hansgrohe). He received 43.2% of the vote.
Den is known for his outstanding lead-out skills and is Deceuninck-QuickStep's number one lead-out man; in 2018 and 2019 he helped Elia Viviani rack up wins. He helped newcomer Sam Bennett win the opening sprint at the Tour Down Under and won the Race Talkie before the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
Morkov then supported Bennett in the UAE Tour before returning home early and, after a brief hiatus, winning the Madison world title on the track with Lasse Norman Hansen. He also competed in Paris-Nice in support of Bennett, but the race was cancelled due to an explosive outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19.
Nieve made it to the final of the "World's Best Domestique" voting through the Grand Tour's mountain domestique group.
The 35-year-old Basque rider rarely makes headlines but is a highly regarded member of Mitchelton-Scott after joining the Australian WorldTour team from Team Sky. at the 2018 Giro d'Italia, Simon Yates won a mountain stage after falling and losing Maglia Rosa. Last year, he competed in both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a EspaƱa, finishing 10th overall in his home Grand Tour.
Nieve has ridden 18 Grand Tours and signed a new two-year contract with Mitchelton-Scott last fall.
"He has a wealth of experience. We're a young team, so it's great to have a player with so much experience. He leads by example and is a very solid guy," said coach Matt White.
