Niki Terpstra Am I on a trainer?

Former Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders winner Niki Terpstra is taking the coronavirus blockade in stride, splitting his time between Netflix movies, family time, and indoor training.

Terpstra, 35, was hoping to race this weekend at the Tour de Flanders, and the Direct Energie rider, whose contract was up for renewal, had intended to use the cobbled season to showcase his talent. But with the race postponed, Terpstra and the rest of the peloton were forced to be patient.

"It's a special situation and you have to adapt to it. I'm doing that and enjoying my time at home with my family," Terpstra told Cycling News from her home.

In recent weeks, many professional riders have been syncing up with online cycling platforms to maintain their fitness levels. Terpstra has joined the bandwagon, but she divides her time evenly between work, family, and other important commitments.

"I train indoors.

Asked if he joins the ranks of athletes currently using Zwift, the Dutchman jokingly replied: "I'm on Netflix. I watch a lot of stuff, and I'm happy that season 3 of Ozarks is starting again. I haven't seen the Movistar documentary yet, but it's on my list. I don't like training indoors, but I have to do something."

More seriously, the lack of clarity about the upcoming calendar is causing great anxiety for both players and teams. Several teams have already announced pay cuts and laid off non-essential staff; the UCI is still working out the race schedule for the second half of 2020, but Terpstra, a star of the Classics, was originally supposed to increase his market value in the coming weeks.

However, the experienced Dutchman has taken the situation in stride and is looking ahead to the end of the year with some optimism.

"If you're going to finish your contract, you always want to show yourself. The difference now is that the transfer silliness will start later this year. There's always pressure. But this time it starts late, so we have to be patient. You never know how the season is going to go.

"Right now I'm resting up and when the race calendar is clearer I can start thinking about the future. Because if we can still race later this year, it's going to be a busy program.

"Hopefully we will be able to race in the next few months, but that may be wishful thinking. I hope that the race organizers will be able to secure a place on the new calendar, but first we have to make sure that the situation is under control. Then we can begin our normal lives and start sporting events."
