Matthews Suffers Mechanical Problems at Tour de Flanders

It wasn't supposed to be this way.

The virtual world is designed to stop the inconveniences of reality from trampling on our hopes and dreams, but try telling that to Michael Matthews (Sunweb), who is aiming to win the virtual blockaded edition of the Tour of Flanders.

The Australian rider, along with Greg Van Avermaert (CCC Team), Remco Evenpol (Quick Step), and Oliver Naessen (AG2R La Mondiale) were among the World Tour He was one of the pro riders selected for the online version of the final race in Flanders.

The event was streamed online, and Matthews and his Sunweb teammate Nicolas Roche were at the front of a small group until the Australian lost his chance for victory at the foot of the Oude Quaremont.

Under normal circumstances (i.e. outside), riders often suffer crashes and mechanical problems, but part of the appeal of online racing is that it eliminates such problems. However, Matthews was unable to change gears, and could only watch his rivals as they moved up the virtual road from a computer screen set up in his home.

Matthews' race was over. Van Avermaat won the race thanks to a long-distance attack.

"Sorry guys. Something went wrong with my gears and I got stuck in the 11th at Oude Kwalmont.

Some consolation for Sunweb, as Roche finished third behind Van Avermaat and Nessen.
