Van der Pol to petition for Tour de France debut?

Mathieu Van Der Pol's season plans are up in the air after the Olympics were postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak. The Dutchman told Sporza that he would consider making his Tour de France debut if the event takes place and the Alpecin Phoenix team receives an invitation.

"If the Tour is held again this year, we could lobby to be there," van der Pol told Sporza (open in new tab).

"I think the Tour de France, along with many other types of riders, will be something special. I will certainly embrace it."

Alpecin Phoenix is not among the wild cards selected by Tour de France organizer ASO. In addition to the 19 WorldTour teams, Alcare Samsic, Total Direct Energie, and B&B Hotels Vital Concepts will compete in this year's race.

Van der Pol entered the season with the Classics as his goal, but postponed his Grand Tour debut until next season to focus on preparations for a mountain bike cross-country event in Tokyo. However, with the Olympics taking place in 2021, a Grand Tour, whatever that may be, is on the table this season.

"The Olympic dream is not gone yet. Next year I will probably do mountain biking as normal."

The Tour de France has not yet been cancelled: the ASO says it will decide on a race date by May 15. First, the pandemic must be calmed down enough to allow authorities to permit another large gathering.

Van der Pol was scheduled to compete in the Tour de Flanders today, but instead raced Zwift indoors.

"I love racing in such beautiful weather, 20 degrees and sunshine, I love racing in such beautiful weather," he said.

Organizers of the Tour de Flanders said they intend to hold the race again this year if it is allowed in the fall, but Van der Pol has yet to make any concrete plans.

"We're waiting until we know for sure.
