Like many professional riders, Tom Pidcock's spring and early summer racing program was wiped out by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The British all-rounder had a number of big goals for the coming months, including the Tour de Flanders (open in new tab) and the U23 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Mountain Bike World Championships. Pidcock is staying at his home in Leeds, training outside and zwifting.
On Thursday, he will make his eRacing debut on the online platform at the London International Pro/Am Invitational Race, but he is already thinking about the second half of the year and how his versatility in the many disciplines of cycling can be used to advantage.
"On Thursday I'll do the Zwift Classic and then one or two more. I use Zwift for training and it makes riding on the turbo so much easier and I don't have to stare at a brick wall," Pidcock told Cycling News in an interview conducted online.
"From what I've heard about the race, a lot of people seem to be riding at high wattage, so we'll just have to wait and see. I don't take it as seriously as the World Championships,
"But I think once I'm back to normal I'll have a lot more options as far as racing and getting a little more into it."
The 20-year-old Pidcock continues to race on the road at the U23 level in 2020 before being promoted to the World Tour next season. As cycling tries to find a solution around the race calendar, Pidcock is biding his time before assessing whether his long-term plans will change.
The postponement of the Olympics until the summer of 2021 means that he will have a shot at the mountain bike title in Tokyo. However, his decision and future will ultimately depend on the outcome of next year's race calendar.
Asked if he would consider racing as a stagiaire at the end of 2020, Pidcock replied: "Maybe that would be a good option, but if I want to jump into the mountain biking world, it might not work out. The next Olympics are coming up, so I think there's a good chance I could ride there as well."
"We'll have to see when the races start. I was going for the mountain bike world championships, which were postponed. And I was going for the road world championships. It's a shame because I was looking forward to all the races this year. I don't know how this will affect me in the long run.
"I want to achieve everything I can at the U23 level and I missed out on a lot last year for various reasons, I have one more year of racing left at U23, but I don't know what next year will bring. The overall situation and sponsors could make things tough for cycling.
"The next few weeks were supposed to be the U23 Tour of Flanders in Belgium and then the same version of Liège before the Tour de Yorkshire.
"It's getting into a good routine, two days training, one day relaxing. I'm still allowed to go out in the UK, I've been doing a bit of Zwifting and will be doing a few races. It's an easy way to keep top end form."
Pidcock will make his eRacing debut at the London International Pro/Am Invitational Race (open in new tab) at 7pm BST/2pm EDT.
