Gaviria Returns to Colombia after Six Weeks in UAE Quarantine

Fernando Gaviria finally returned to his native Colombia on Wednesday after being quarantined in the United Arab Emirates for about six weeks.

Gaviria, a member of UAE Team Emirates, contracted COVID-19 during a race on the UAE Tour.

The UAE team decided to self-quarantine as a precautionary measure, and Gaviria tested positive for coronavirus on March 12.

Gaviria stayed in the UAE for a month and underwent routine tests at the hospital, which confirmed that he was not infected with the virus. He received the all-clear on March 26 and was discharged from the hospital, but had to wait until Wednesday before he could return home.

He landed in Bogota at 11:00 a.m. local time on a specially chartered plane with 56 other Colombians and a load of medical supplies. In accordance with protocols currently in place in Colombia, he was immediately quarantined in the capital and must wait until he returns to his home in La Ceja.

The Colombian Cycling Federation states that he will be able to return to his family "when circumstances permit."

"I want to thank the medical team that took care of me in the United Arab Emirates, for their great work and dedication, and everyone who has supported me during this period of recuperation and recovery," Gaviria said upon his discharge two weeks ago.

"I hope that this extraordinary situation will pass as soon as possible so that I can return to my daily routine."
