Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) is auctioning off his bicycle along with his Tour de France jersey to provide food and other supplies to children in Colombia, where a coronavirus outbreak is underway.
The 23-year-old, who won the Tour de France last year, is conducting the auction to raise funds for Fundación Exito, a charity for children.
Three jerseys are up for auction, including the iconic yellow Tour de France leader's jersey that Bernal wore last year. Also up for grabs is the white jersey Bernal wore as the best young rider early in the race, as well as the standard Team Ineos jersey.
In addition to the jerseys, Bernal is also auctioning off a bike "similar to what I use in training and racing. His standard bike is a Pinarello Dogma F12, with Shimano Dura-Ace wheels and groupset.
"We are facing a big problem right now here in Colombia and around the world, and together with FundaciónExito, we are organizing a great auction that many people will be able to participate in," Bernal said in a video message.
"Additionally, if you would like to donate, please visit fundacionexito.org (opens in new tab). From the money we raise, we can collect supplies and distribute them to the children who need them most."
"I am doing something in my position. This is a challenge. Everyone accepts the challenge. This is my challenge. I hope everyone accepts it too, and I hope we can raise a lot of money for the children who need it so badly." [Bernal's auction took place 24 hours after Alberto Contador put his 2011 Specialized Tarmac on eBay. Other professional cycling riders contributing to the coronavirus relief effort include Davide Martinelli. Davide uses his bicycle to deliver medicines and other supplies to vulnerable people in his native Italy, while Michał Kwiatkowski provides an apartment he owns in Poland for doctors and nurses.
