The 2020 Italian Championships have been postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak. The championships were scheduled to take place in Vicenza from June 14-21, but Italian Federation president Renato Di Rocco told Il Corriere dello Sport (opens in new tab) that the postponement was due to the fact that the competition is unlikely to resume before August.
"Hopefully we will be able to resume racing in August, maybe by the end of July, but not before," said President Di Rocco.
"The Grand Tour and the Monument will be our priority, but we want to save as many races as possible. Meanwhile, we have also postponed the Italian Championships, which were scheduled for June."
The course for the 2020 Italian Championships was designed by Filippo Pozzato from Sandrigo, near Vicenza. The elite men's road race was to start in Bassano del Grappa and finish in Cittadella after a lap around the Rosina climb near Marostica. It is not known when the postponed Italian Championships will take place.
The UCI has suspended all races until at least June 1, but several high-profile races in June, including the Criterium du Dauphiné and the Tour de Suisse, have already been postponed or cancelled. Most European national championships, like the postponed Italian championships, are scheduled for the week before the Tour de France in late June.
The Tour is scheduled for June 27-July 19, but is unlikely to take place as scheduled.
Il Corriere dello Sport asked Di Rocco about the prospects of a revised calendar, with the Tour de France taking place in late August or September, the Giro d'Italia in October, and the Vuelta a España in November.
"It is possible. The organizers are looking for a final agreement," Di Rocco said.
"If the World Championships (scheduled for September 20-27; editor's note) are changed, the Giro could be moved up a week.
The UCI recently reached an agreement with race organizers and teams to extend the season through November, but DiRocco noted that "it's through mid-November, not beyond that."
