USA Cycling announced Monday that due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is extending the suspension of all permits to issue sanctioned events, including USA Cycling races, rides, camps, and clinics, through May 31.
The sport's governing body had originally announced that it would suspend events until May 3, but was forced to postpone that date for another month as the United States faces an ongoing national emergency.
Additionally, USA Cycling announced that it is currently working with stakeholders, event organizers, and medical professionals to develop guidelines and best practices to ensure the safety of participants, event staff, volunteers, and the community in which the event will be held.
Initially, it was anticipated that 775 events would be affected by the May 3 cancellation. However, now that that date has been moved back to the end of the month, more events are expected to be canceled or postponed.
"We continue to call on all event directors, clubs, coaches, athletes, and members to follow guidelines and regulations issued by national, state, and local authorities regarding social distancing and prohibited activities. This includes the cessation of gatherings such as group rides and other group or team activities that bring people together," the press statement said.
In March, USA Cycling announced a decision to reduce its staff by 15% and furlough another 25% in anticipation of a 30% loss of revenue due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
USA Cycling's decision to extend the race suspension coincides with the UCI's announcement that the race will be suspended until June 1. This was a unanimous decision by all parties involved given the seriousness of the health situation around the world.
