Coronavirus Destroys U.S. Pro Road Calendar, Cancels Tulsa Tough

The 2020 USA Cycling Pro Road Calendar has been cut in half due to a coronavirus outbreak, and the Tulsa Tough Weekend of criterium races has been canceled. Last week, the governing body made the decision to suspend all event permits through May 31, and the weekend's Armed Forces Cycling Classic was also subject to cancellation.

Organizers of the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough, which was scheduled to take place in Oklahoma from June 12-14, 2020, decided to cancel the event prior to further action by USA Cycling.

"The medical community needs the opportunity to control this virus so we can gather in peace and enjoy the top level experience people expect from the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough," the press release stated.

"All currently registered crits and fonds will automatically be deferred to the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough, June 11-13, 2021. Due to the generous support of the sponsors, those who wish to receive a refund may apply for a refund. Registrants will receive instructions regarding postponement and refunds.

Executive Director Malcolm McCollum said the race cancellation was a responsible choice.

"We will work hard to make the 15th Saint Francis Tulsa Tough worth the wait and hope to see you all again in 2021."

Unlike Europe, the U.S. cycling calendar had not yet begun until the pandemic postponed early events: the Joe Martin Stage Race scheduled for April and May, the Alabama Cycling Classic, Wilmington Grand Prix, and Winston-Salem Classic were postponed, and this month's Redlands Bicycle Classic, Tour of the Gila, and June's Rochester Twilight Criterium were cancelled.

Organizers of the Armed Forces Classic have yet to confirm their plans, but an announcement on the race's website favors cancellations over postponements.

Organizers of the Rally H. Miller Tour of Utah have canceled the April 3 event.

The next races are the Crono Christine Armstrong and Andersen Banducci Twilight Criterium in July, the Colorado Classic at the end of August, and the Gateway Cup, Maryland Cycling Classic, and Thompson Bucks County Classic in September.

The first of these was the Coronado Criterium.

The coronavirus pandemic infected approximately 2 million people worldwide and more than 500,000 in the United States, killing more than 23,000.
