French champion Barguil ready to deliver meals to locals

French road race champion Warren Barguil (Arkea Samsic) offered his cycling service to deliver food to those unable to shop in his home region of Brittany during the French coronavirus blockade.

According to "L'Equipe," as soon as Barguil saw the social media post, it let the food delivery platform know it was ready to help.

"If you are looking for a bicycle delivery person for people with mobility difficulties in the Lorient region, I am available," Barguil replied.

When the locals could not believe that Barguil was really prepared to deliver food in their area, the 28-year-old had to dispel their doubts.

"I'm serious. This is no joke. If there's anything I can do to help, I'd be happy to."

Indeed, the Frenchman is not the first professional cyclist to offer his help to the local community. Italian Astana rider Davide Martinelli receives medicines from a pharmacy in the town of Lovato, half an hour away, and then cycles to the people of the village of Rodetto in Lombardy to deliver them.

Meanwhile, Dylan Groenewegen of Jumbo Visma and Jorian Dorfur of Boels Dolmans are delivering food by bicycle to people in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively, who cannot get to a store near their homes.

"I want to help those who need help," Barguil told L'Equipe.

"I don't think anyone imagined at the beginning that it would last this long," he said of the measures taken by governments around the world to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. 'It feels very, very strange. My wife goes shopping once a week, and I'm never more than a kilometer from home. But the good side of confinement is that I really enjoy spending time with my wife and my little son."

"This virus reminds us that everyone is vulnerable," Barguil continued. 'It may take time, but we have to wait for the storm to pass. But staying cooped up at home is not easy for anyone.

Barguil, who won the tricolored French champion jersey last June, only half-jokingly said that if the championships were held again in June, he would risk becoming the national champion who wore the jersey for the fewest number of racing days.

With the chances of that happening becoming increasingly unlikely, and with no races being held, he may in fact end up holding the iconic jersey for considerably longer than a year.

Barguil raced in 2020 for four days at the Tour de la Provence, the one-day races Ardèche Classic and Drome Classic (Barguil finished second), and the first day of Paris-Nice (Barguil tried to rejoin the pack after a crash and was disqualified when a team car Barguil was disqualified after he hid behind a team car while trying to rejoin the pack after a crash. [Barguil said, "We had some great results in Arcair-Samsic, from the start of the season until the competition was suspended," and the team's newest rider, Nairo Quintana, won both the Tour de la Provence and the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var. and the Paris-Nice final stage, while Nasser Bouhani won sprint races in both the Tour de la Provence and the Tour of Saudi Arabia.

"It's a little frustrating because it was going so well," Barguil said.

The big story now is that the French government announced Monday that no major rallies will take place before mid-July. [Barguil said, "The Tour is the showcase of cycling, the race that revitalizes everything.
