Evenpoel completes 7-hour Easter ride on Flemish cobblestones

Remco Evenepole (Deceuninck-Quick Step) was not scheduled to ride Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, but he rode for seven hours on the cobblestones. [This is because, unlike France and Spain, Belgium allows riding outdoors.

Evenpoel posted a video on social media of Sunday's run through the Ardennes region of Flanders, near his home in northern Belgium.

"Seven hours of biking over cobblestones and Flanders climbs, followed by a small barbecue at home as a reward," Evenepoel wrote.

Although in his second year as a professional, Evenepoel has concentrated primarily on time trials and stage races, winning both the Vuelta a San Juan and the Volta ao Algarve this season before the race interruption.

Last year he won the Clasica San Sebastian, but has shown little interest in the cobbled classics in northern Belgium. However, before Sunday's cobbled 7-hour run, he took part in a de facto "blockaded" version of the Tour of Flanders.

In addition to riding his bike, Evenpoel says he is also interested in how he can help others. On Monday's VRT podcast, DeTuning Quickstep manager Patrick Lefevere praised the 20-year-old's maturity and revealed that he inquired how the team would be affected by the coronavirus situation and whether a pay cut was necessary.

"Lemko was the first player to send me a message saying, 'Boss, are you okay? ' and he sent me a message.

"He would sometimes come up with ideas on his own. He suggested delivering groceries by bicycle, as Jorian Dole and Dylan Groenewegen are doing now. But that was very early in the crisis, and at the time he wasn't sure if it would be accepted. But it is amazing how much attention he still gets today, thanks to his social media and others."[15
