La Course and Giro Rosa cancel initial dates due to coronavirus

The dates of two of the most high-profile races in the Women's World Tour, the Tour de France La Course (July 19) and the Giro d'Italia Internationale Femminionale (June 26-July 5), have officially been canceled due to a coronavirus outbreak.

ASO, the organizer of La Course, has confirmed that a women's one-day race will be held within the Tour de France scheduled for September, but no date has yet been set.

"The FDJ's Tour de France course scheduled for July 19 on the Champs-Elysées will also be postponed during the Tour de France 2020, although no date has yet been set."

Due to public health concerns over the coronavirus, all races, including World Tour-level races, have been cancelled or postponed. Namely, the women's World Tour races Strade Bianche, Bebridgenslonde van Drenthe, Trofeo Alfredo Binda, Dreiderghe Bruges des Pannees, Ghent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders, Ardennes Classic, and Tour of Chongming Island, And the Women's Tour was cancelled. Cyclingnews contacted the organizers of the Giro Rosa about the possibility of changing the date or adjusting the duration of the race later in the year, but had not received a response before this article was published.

La Course was originally scheduled to take place on July 19 on the Champs-Elysées in Paris.

The UCI and ASO confirmed that the Tour de France will run from August 29 to September 20; ASO also confirmed that it is working on new dates for La Course to be held at the same time as the Tour de France in September, but the exact dates have not yet been determined.

The UCI continues to provide updates on its website on cancellations and postponements of competitions due to the new coronavirus. At the same time, the UCI is working with race organizers to determine rescheduling of postponed events and to develop a calendar for the second half of the season.

The UCI said in a press statement on Wednesday that it is working with organizers, AIOCC, ASO, RCS, Unipublic, and Flanders Classics leaders, teams (AIGCP), and riders (CPA) to determine a revised calendar. However, priority will be given to the three Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España) and the five monuments (Milan-San Remo, Tour de Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and Il Lombardia).

In addition, the World Championships (September 20-27) and the European Championships will be given priority, with the National Championships moved to August 22-23.

Regarding the Women's World Tour, the UCI stated that it aims to have this year's revised edition ready by May 15.

"In parallel, and in close cooperation with the various stakeholders, the UCI continues to work to have a revised version of the UCI Women's World Tour calendar and a new version of the entire UCI International Calendar (men's and women's races across all cycling disciplines) ready by May 15, 2020 at the latest. The UCI is continuing to work on this calendar. This calendar will remain dependent on the global health situation," the UCI said in a press statement.

This year's Women's World Tour will feature only one race, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road in February. Postnord Vogorda TTT & Road Race (August 8-9), Ladies Tour of Norway (August 13-16), GP de Ploué (August 22), Boels Ladies Tour (August 25-30), Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta (September 5-6) and Tour of Guangxi (Oct. 20), there are currently eight races remaining on the Women's World Tour calendar with their original dates.
