Organizers of the Amstel Gold Race are confident that the race, along with other major one-day races postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, will secure a slot on the 2020 UCI international road race calendar to be revised this fall.
According to a Sunday report in the Dutch news media NOS (opens in new tab), race director Leo van Fleet said: "I dare say we will be part of it."
The UCI has suspended all bicycle racing until July 1 and is working with race organizers to determine rescheduling of postponed events and compile a possible late season calendar.
The sports governing bodies are prioritizing three Grand Tours, five Monuments, the World Championships (September 20-27), and the European Championships. The majority of national championships in cycling countries have been moved to the weekend of August 22-23.
A revised UCI Women's World Tour calendar and a new version of the entire UCI International calendar (men's and women's races in all cycling disciplines) will be released by May 15.
The Amstel Gold Race is not one of the five monuments of the men's calendar, but it is the first race of the Ardennes Classics and both men's and women's WorldTour races will be held on the same day. Van Fleet said he is in talks with the UCI about possible new race dates.
"We are already talking about dates, early in the calendar," Van Fleet told NOS. 'If they make a new calendar, then it won't work. I have great hope and information that we will succeed."
[14The Amstel Gold Race was originally scheduled for the World Tour men's and women's races on Sunday, April 19, but like many other races, public health restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
The UCI has already changed the Tour de France from August 29 to September 20, with speculation that the Giro d'Italia could be held in October and the Vuelta a España in November.
The dates for the five monuments have not yet been finalized, but NOS reports that Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix could be held in August, and the Tour de Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardia in October.
Van Fleet said he hopes the 2020 Amstel Gold Race will also be held in October. 'October, that is six months from now? That would be most ideal. 'We respect the monuments, but we will certainly participate.'
The 2019 edition of the men's and women's Amstel Gold Races were the two most exciting of the season, with Mathieu van der Pol (then with Corendon Circus) and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon SRAM) winning their respective events.
