The UCI is currently working with stakeholders in women's cycling (associations, organizations, riders, and teams) to finalize the women's race calendar for COVID-19 and beyond by May 15. However, race organizers are facing a difficult decision, as the Trofeo Alfredo Binda in northern Italy has announced the cancellation of the 2020 Women's World Tour One-Day Race. The Piccolo Trofeo Alfredo Binda for juniors was also cancelled.
According to Italian reports, the Giro Rosa has been postponed from early July to mid-September and may be held during the second week of the rescheduled Tour de France.
The Trofeo Vinda was originally scheduled for March 22, but was postponed to June 2 after the COVID-19 coronavirus struck the Lombardy region. With numerous deaths in Italy and many other parts of the world, forcing social distancing for several months, the organizers of the Trofeo Binda decided that it was not yet the right time to hold a bicycle race that would involve the local population at large in the town of Cittiglio near Varese.
The tentative date for the 22nd edition in 2021 was set for March 21; the 2019 Trofeo Binda was won by Marianne Vos.
"This year does not seem right. Our region has suffered terribly and was not in a position to host a bike race. It is better to wrap the banner and wait until next year," said Mario Minervino, president of the organizing committee.
"This was a very difficult but necessary decision, especially considering the great suffering we experience here in Lombardy on a daily basis. Both the Italian Cycling Federation and the International Cycling Union (UCI) have proposed summer dates, but for us the Trofeo Binda and the Mini Trofeo Binda involved children, many fans, riders, and the entire community who in many ways look forward to the dates of these two races It is a very popular festival.
Last week, the Giro d'Italia International Women's Championship (Giro Rosa) was officially postponed from its original date of June 26 to July 5.
The women's division of the Cyclist Professional Association (CPA) recently announced on Twitter that the Giro Rosa is requesting a new date of September 5-13.
The Italian stage race has been held during the men's Tour de France in recent years in order to ensure television coverage by national broadcaster RAI immediately after the Tour de France is broadcast.17]
However, CPA women's manager Alessandra Cappellotto told Cycling News that any possible changes would depend on the progress of the pandemic over the next few months,
and that the event would be held during the Tour de France.
She said that the CPA women are in constant contact with the UCI and trying to manage the new late season calendar. She also emphasized that any possible schedule changes would depend on national government restrictions, guidelines, and health precautions in the midst of the new coronavirus pandemic.
"The calendar is a very important issue and a very complex discussion point," Cappelotto said. She told Cycling News that the most recent meeting with the UCI took place on Friday, April 17, to discuss the possibility of a new calendar.
." We were also there for this special period regarding all other matters related to women's cycling, especially COVID-19."
Cappelotto said that if the COVID-19 epidemic eases and governments lift health restrictions across Europe, the CPA Women will ask the UCI to extend the race calendar to the end of November.
This would allow the majority of postponed Women's World Tour races to be rescheduled for the 2020 season.
