At just 20 years old and in his second professional season, Detunink Quickstep's Remco Evenpoel continues to amaze and impress. And his latest feat on Monday was to run the famous Belgian cobblestone climb, Mühl van Geraasbergen, 50 times in one day.
While cycling has been closed, Evenpoel has proposed a number of "challenges" to keep him busy, one of which was to cycle up Mühl van Geraarsbergen 10 times. However, concerned about the large number of people coming to see the spectacle amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, Evenpoel canceled his plan to take on the Mur last week.
On Sunday, Evenpoel rode the postponed Liège-Bastogne-Liège 256 km. The next day, instead of resting, Evenpoel took on the Muur van Geraardsbergen without notice, running it 50 times instead of the 10 he had originally planned.
Evenepoel then posted a picture of his bike computer, showing over 8 hours of running time and a distance of 216.9 km.
"Done! Tough!" he wrote.
According to HLN.be, Evenpoel ran a vertical distance of 5,145 meters. Since "climbing Everest" (a considerable feat to climb the height of Everest by bicycle) requires a vertical distance of 8,848 meters, this shows the magnitude of Evenpoel's effort the day after he completed the Liege-Bastogne-Liege distance.
Belgium is one of the European countries that, unlike France, Spain, and Italy, allows athletes to train outdoors during the COVID-19 limit.
Evenpoel logged 12 race days this season before the competition was suspended, winning a stage and GC at the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina and two stages and the overall at the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal.
