The Deutschland Tour, one of many events organized by Tour de France organizer Amaury Sport Organisation, has been canceled after the German government banned mass events until August 31 to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it was canceled. This 2.pro rank 4 stage race was scheduled to take place from August 20-23, but the 2021 event will follow the same route.
Claude Lach, Executive Director of the Association for the Promotion of Cycling, said, "It is unfortunate, but due to the current situation and the decision of the German authorities it is clear that the Deutschland Tour cannot take place this year. We thank our public partners, sponsors, sport participants and fans for their understanding and support. We are already working hard, collectively, to postpone this event to next year and to celebrate Germany's largest cycling festival again in August 2021."
According to Lach, the planned route has been revised, the stages in Stralsund and Nuremberg will be held as planned for the 2021 event, and the finale in Stuttgart, scheduled for 2021, may be changed to 2022.
"All host cities and participating federal states have given positive signals for this initiative," Lach said. 'They have also expressed great interest in hosting the Tour in 2021.' It is the common goal of all partners that the Deutschland Tour will run the same 720 km from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to Bavaria in late August 2021."
Alexander Badlow, mayor of Stralsund, expressed disappointment at the postponement. 'Of course it is disappointing that the Deutschland Tour will not take place on the 30th anniversary of German reunification. But health comes first, so let's prolong our anticipation."
[10ASO also faces the possibility of the Criterium du Dauphiné being shortened or cancelled after the French Prime Minister placed similar restrictions on large crowds.
ASO hosted Paris-Nice in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, with the final stage cancelled and several stages held with limited gatherings in the start and finish towns.
Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège will be held later in the fall, but Volta a Catalunya was canceled due to lack of space on the calendar, and La Flèche Wallonne, Tour de Yorkshire, and Eschborn-Frankfurt are races with the UCI strictly still postponed until a final decision on the calendar is made between the organizers.
