The UCI and several key officials will meet Wednesday to finalize the post-COVID-19 race calendar. [Meanwhile, the Giro d'Italia, the Vuelta a España, and all the one-day classics are all in the works as the UCI tries to cram more major races into just a few months without knowing what the coronavirus outbreak will be or if major spring events will be allowed, Tough negotiations are being forced.
WorldTour teams like Trek-Segafredo have not raced since mid-March, and with most of Europe still under pandemic lockdown, teams can consider their next steps once racing resumes. However, the calendar has not been finalized, so teams and riders remain in limbo until the competition schedule is finalized. [Trek-Segafredo manager Luca Guercilena told Cycling News this week.
"We need to understand and analyze the new calendar and then decide what protocols to use. They could affect the goals of each rider."
Trek-Segafredo is considering dividing its roster into mini-teams or groups once racing resumes. Each segment or group would be responsible for a defined number of races based on geographic boundaries. This way, if the number of COVID-19s increases, or if a race is blocked in an area, the teams can still race with two team structures.
"We might create two or three different groups and pick teams based on specific race groups. In that case, we would not swap members from race to race as we normally do. Nevertheless, it is complicated until we have the race calendar," Guercilena added.
It is not only the three Grand Tours that need new dates, but also the week-long stage races and five one-day monuments in mainland Europe; the UCI has already announced that the road world championships will be held as scheduled in the fall, but Guercilena said the sports organization urgently need to finalize the rest of the calendar.
According to the tentative calendar leaked to the media in recent weeks, racing could resume with Strade Bianche on Saturday, August 1, and Milan-San Remo on Saturday, August 8. The Giro d'Italia will be held October 3-25, and the Vuelta a España will overlap with the Corsa Rosa for a week. The Tour of Flanders could be held on October 11, Paris-Roubaix on October 18, Il Lombardia on October 31, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege on November 8. All races will depend on the control of the second wave of COVID-19 viruses and the decisions of the countries regarding major sporting events.
Trek-Segafredo, which runs both men's and women's WorldTour teams, must be prepared to adapt.
"It would help a lot in terms of transportation and logistics if the athletes were divided into specific smaller groups. That way we can better control the health aspect," Guercilena said.
"Sure, we have enough leaders to cover all the races, but what we need is a calendar from which we can decide what to do. We have the Italian calendar, the French and Belgian calendar, and the Spanish calendar. So it makes sense to have three groups."
"It's about having control when you start a race. We know that the authorities will have the final say on what happens and which races take place. We are ready. "
Due to the economic recession and its impact on COVID-19 sponsors, several teams have already announced wage and staff cuts in recent weeks. So far, Trek Segafredo has not felt the urge to cut wages or contracts. According to Guercilena, another reason the calendar is necessary is to provide stability and certainty to the sponsors of both teams.
"We respect all contracts and the needs of the teams.
"We want to do an analysis later in the season. If it is later in the season and we can provide good visibility to all sponsors, it would make more sense to look at the situation then rather than now. Our goal is to honor 100% of the contracts for the entire men's and women's team."
At this time, it is unclear how Trek Segafredo will divide its roster. Vincenzo Nibali planned to target the Giro d'Italia in May and the Olympic Games in the summer. Richie Porte planned to compete in the Tour de France in July.
With Nibali, Porte, and the consistent Bauke Mollema, the Trek-Segafredo men's team has options as Grand Tour leaders, but Guercilena does not expect a roster announcement until at least the end of May.
