Ritchie is one of the most respected names in gravel bikes, and now the California brand has unveiled a completely redesigned Outback frameset.
The frames feature the tested chromoly construction that Tom Ritchie has always championed for his off-road bikes, but the geometry has been thoroughly revised.
The new Outback has significantly longer chainstays for improved stability during high-speed descents and wider tire clearance.
Ritchie claims that the 48mm wide 700c tires, or 650b rubber in a 2-inch configuration, roll comfortably on the new Outback's rear triangle even in muddy conditions.
Both the front and rear wheels are secured by a 12mm thru-axle, which greatly improves overall stiffness and steering precision. [The front steering is a modified form of Ritchie's carbon fiber Adventure fork with rack and fender mounts. The Outback's Adventure fork weighs only 473 grams and, interestingly, features a straight steerer.
Ritchie also loosened the head angle geometry by 2 degrees, slightly slowing the bike's responsiveness and improving overall feedback for handling on gravel roads.
The maximum 1x chainring size is 46T or 50/34T if you stick to a front double.
Other notable frame details on the new Outback include a rear brake disc mount that has been changed from a post to a flat, allowing up to 160mm brake rotors can now be used. A threaded bottom bracket secures the Outback's crankset and should appeal to endurance-minded riders who keep their gravel bikes running in the worst winter conditions.
Ritchey lists the weight of the large size outback frame at 2,270 grams. It is available in five sizes, all priced at 1,299 pounds.
