Bahrain McLaren will be one of 10 men's teams confirmed to compete in the Zwift Tour for All, May 4-8. Team principal Rod Ellingworth said the five-stage event is important for riders to maintain their competitive spirit and exposure to the team's title brand while the actual race is suspended due to COVID-19.
"The Tour-for-All brings together several important elements for teams during this unprecedented time. It keeps the race mindset alive, it encourages exposure for our partners, and it gives our fans a unique opportunity to watch us and run with us. Plus, it's all for a great cause," Ellingworth said in a press statement.
Bahrain McLaren will be joined by Alpecin Phoenix, CCC Team, Groupama-FDJ, Israel Start-Up Nation, NTT Pro Cycling, Rally Cycling, Team Cofidis, Mitchelton-Scott, EF Along with Pro Cycling, they will be on the virtual start line for the Tour for All on May 4.
The men's and women's teams will compete in separate races, with the women competing before the men, and television coverage will be evenly distributed between Eurosport and Global Cycling Network (GCN).
Zwift will also host a corresponding Tour for All month-long fundraiser for the COVID-19 crisis fund of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders); Zwift will support pandemic relief efforts with a 125,000 dollars to kick off the tour. Then, if the 250,000 participants complete at least one stage, Zwift will match that donation at the end of the tour.
The UCI international calendar has been suspended since the new coronavirus swept the world in February and early March. The sport's governing body has suspended all competitions until July 1 and all WorldTour events until August 1, with over 800 race organizers requesting event cancellations.
Five WorldTour teams announced that riders from Astana, Lotto Soudal, CCC Team, Mitchelton Scott, and Bahrain McLaren will take a 70% pay cut for March, April, and May.
The UCI has already announced that the Tour de France will be rescheduled from August 29 to September 20, and will announce a revised calendar for the second half of the World Tour on May 5.
Meanwhile, teams and riders have been enjoying success with events such as the Tour de Flanders Lockdown edition, Zwift Classics, Team Ineos eRace, Digital Swiss 5, and Virtual Giro d'Italia, and virtual race Participation.
Mark Cavendish of Bahrain McLaren recently ran 10 hours, 37 minutes, and 32 seconds in Zwift's "Climb Everest" challenge. This equates to an altitude of 8,848 meters on Mount Everest, and he and former teammate Luke Rowe ran 211 kilometers.
The Swift Tour for All pro stage race begins on May 4 with a 52.9 km race on the Innsbruck circuit. The second stage will be a 46.2 km race on the "Cobbled Climb" circuit in Richmond. It will then tackle the 72.6 km "Medio Fondo" circuit in Watopia. The final stage will also be Watopia's "Sand and Sequoia" 42.8 km. the race will end on May 8 with the 46.5 km "Quatch Quest" finishing at the summit of the Alpes du Zwift.
