The 2020 UCI WorldTour calendar is set to feature three Grand Tours in 71 days, with the final monument, the Giro di Lombardia, possibly ending on November 14.
The unofficial plan leaked to the Spanish newspaper AS and posted on their website on Sunday morning is understood to be the likely race schedule, but the newspaper article emphasizes that the plan is not yet finalized and that other options remain on the table.
Another huge factor to keep in mind is the progression of the pandemic. Further outbreaks of pandemics, or tighter social distancing and other public health regulations, could have a considerable knock-on effect.
However, if the leaked plan proceeds as AS expects, the race will start on Saturday, August 1 at Strade Bianche, leaving the start of the postponed Tour de France in Nice on August 29 intact.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this plan is that the Giro d'Italia, which runs from October 3 to October 25, will coincide with the Monument and the Vuelta a España.
Liège-Bastogne-Liège will start on October 4, the Tour de Flanders on October 18, and the Vuelta a España, already shortened to 18 stages, on October 20. In addition, Paris-Roubaix is set for November 1, coinciding with the second weekend of the Vuelta, which ends on November 8.
None of the four-weekend events currently on the tentative schedule, including the BinckBank Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico during the Tour de France, Tour de Pollogne, and Dauphiné Liber, will exceed six days.
Many races, including one-day events that have not yet been held or postponed until 2021, such as the World Tour One-Day in Canada and the Tour of the Guangxi, do not appear on the AS published calendar.
However, given that the plan is understood to be in draft form and far from definitive, it is quite possible that other races not currently included in the schedule will be included in a more definitive structure at a later date.
The final UCI plan will be announced on Tuesday morning, but there has already been one delay.
