Jumbo Visma announced Sunday that Jonas Vingegaard has signed a two-year contract renewal through 2022; the 23-year-old Danish rider hopes to continue his development with the WorldTour team under the management of Richard Plug.
"I am happy to extend my contract with Team Jumbo Visma. I've loved my time with the team so far. Moreover, I am already growing well and I hope to achieve higher goals with this team in the near future. I am proud to be a part of this team. At the moment, there is no other team that suits me better."
Vingegaard joined Jumbo Visma in 2019 for his first full year on the World Tour. During this time, he finished second overall in the Tour of Denmark and won a queen stage in the Tour of Poland.
Merijn Zeeman, director of Jumbo Visma, said he expects Vingegaard to develop further in the coming years.
"Jonas is a promising talent," Zeeman said. We have high hopes for him." We are pleased to have been able to release him from his contract and extend it until the end of 2022. This way we can continue to build a successful career together."
The renewal of Vingegaard's contract is one of the few contract announcements made while the sport was suspended by the new coronavirus. World Tour teams CCC, Bahrain McLaren, Astana, Lotto Soudal, and Mitchelton Scott announced pay cuts as their sponsors suffered the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Zeman said it is important to continue investing in the future of cycling. He said, "I think it's important, especially in these difficult times, to send a signal that we will continue to develop the team."
