Mauro Veni said that RCS Sport is evaluating two locations in southern Italy for the Grande Partenza and confirmed that the rescheduled 2020 Giro d'Italia will start in Italy, not Hungary.
"We are studying two hypothetical new starting points for the Giro d'Italia. At the moment it's complicated to talk to the regional government, and we hope to confirm the start within a couple of weeks."
The Giro, which was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak, was originally scheduled to start this Saturday in Budapest and move to Sicily before stage four. On Tuesday, the UCI announced that the Giro has been rescheduled for October 3-25 as part of its revised fall race calendar.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, RCS Sport tempered its satisfaction with the plan to resume the season by noting that it had proposed an alternate date with less conflict between World Tour races.
The postponed 2020 Giro coincides with the Vuelta a España (October 20-November 8) and three or more monumental classics: Liège-Bastogne-Liège (October 4), Tour de Flanders (October 11), and Paris-Roubaix (October 25) The event also clashes with the following.
"The UCI's announcement of the calendar is an important step in the re-planning of the season for all involved. It is the result of unparalleled and extensive work involving institutions, organizations, teams and others who contributed to this difficult choice in various capacities," read the carefully worded communiqué from RCS Sport.
"In order to preserve and protect the important legacy of cycling racing, some sacrifices had to be made, given the short time frame in which all races of the season could be included. In our opinion, we proposed several alternatives that could reduce the overlap between races on the calendar. These suggestions were not adopted. However, we believe that this result is important for the restart, especially given the dramatic health situation that is affecting all areas of our lives at this time."
[14The men's and women's world tours will resume on August 1 with the RCS Sport event Strade Bianche, while Milan - San Remo is set for August 8. Tirreno-Adriatico is set for September 7-14, coinciding with the second week of the Tour de France, and Il Lombardia is set for October 31, six days after the expected end of the Giro in Milan. Veni said, "What was essential for us was to create a calendar that would allow us to organize the event."
