Tour de France Jumbo Bisma keeps Dumoulin, Roglic, Kruijswijk in the plans

In December, Jumbo-Visma made the unusual decision to announce its Tour de France team.

The eight riders selected by Jumbo-Visma include a strong three-pronged GC attack of Primoz Roglic, Tom Dumoulin, and Steven Kruijswijk, who will be able to take on Team Ineos. After the UCI announced its tentative plan to save the 2020 cycling season on Tuesday, Jumbo Visma's Directeur Sportif Merijn Zeeman told Cyclingnews that the team's plan is to send the same riders to the Tour. [Our goal for the Tour de France remains the same. Normally, the Tour de France roster doesn't change," Zeeman told Cyclingnews.

Zeman said that Jumbo Visma may have to consider how the team's riders will spend the restricted period of time, and that team management will have to format its lineup for the UCI's new condensed race calendar, which presents a major challenges, he acknowledged. However, Zeman added that his primary goal remains the ambition to win the Tour de France with one of the three Grand Tour leaders.

"However, we still need to see how the riders will get through this period and whether they are ready to reach the highest level in the Tour. There is no normal preparation race where you can see how the athletes race, but I am confident they will run well," he explained.

"Nothing is set in stone yet, but the main goal for this year is to compete in the Tour and try to win, and that will not change. I hope their plan comes to fruition. Given all the circumstances, I would be very grateful if I could just race and do these beautiful races. For me, that's the most important thing."

Tom Dumoulin is concerned that if he cannot travel from his home in Belgium, he will not have a high-altitude training camp as part of his preparation. The former Giro d'Italia winner told Cycling News in April that without such training methods, he would not be able to compete for overall victory in the three-week race.

Dumoulin has not raced since the Criterium du Dauphiné last June and moved teams over the winter. His arrival in Jambovisma was seen as the missing piece of the jigsaw for the Dutch team as it seeks to end Team Ineos' domination of the Tour de France.

Dumoulin's comments over the high altitude camp were seen as an admission of the problems the riders will face once the lockdown in Europe is over, but Zeman was somewhat more positive.

"My opinion is that things should be left to happen. If the move becomes impossible, it will mean different things for each rider's body type. But the most important thing is to be able to race. Maybe we can have a small training camp before the Tour, maybe we can have a private training camp. If so, we have to accept that. It's the government that sets the rules," he noted.
