Zipp has introduced a new 303 S wheelset that incorporates all the latest trends in width and tubeless road tire profiles.
The American cycling composite brand has changed the profile and dimensions of its 303. With the 303 S, Zipp has designed a wheel that offers the low rolling resistance and ride comfort benefits of wider tires.
The rim depth of Zipp's 303 S is 45 mm, the same as the previous model; the company's aerodynamics experts calculated and tested various rim profiles and found that a 45 mm depth is the best blend of aerodynamic efficiency and spoke tension.
The bead profile of the 303 S is hookless, allowing for easy mounting of tubeless tires. Zipp recognizes that many road and gravel riders admit that wider tires roll better.
The 303 S follows this new rim engineering trend, with an inside width of 23 mm, considerably larger than previous 303 models. Zipp recommends an ideal tire width of 28 mm for road tires and 50 mm for gravel rubbers.
Wider rims allow for lower inflation pressures without sacrificing tire shape or construction. Mounting road or gravel tires at lower pressures and on wider rim profiles provides a larger contact patch for superior braking and cornering performance.
According to data collected by Zipp, the new 303 S saves 10w per wheel at 40 km/h on flat roads compared to the previous 303.
With a total of 24 spokes, Zipp's 303 S wheels spin on 76/176 DB-spec hubs measuring 100x12 mm front and 142x12 mm rear. Zipp's 303 S rear hub internals consist of three leaf-spring actuation pawls.
The 303 S uses a center-locking disc brake mount instead of the traditional 6-bolt arrangement, and also features a locking ring.
Zipp will sell the 303 S for 470 pounds front and 515 pounds rear. Wheelset weight is 1540 grams.
