The new post-COVID-19 race calendar announced by the UCI will be a headache for race organizers, stretching team rosters and testing rider fitness, but the October 25 race will be a unique and historic super Sunday, with the year's most important race of the year will be condensed into a few hours.
Late October usually marks the end of the European racing season, but this year, October 25 will be one of the highlights of the season, with Paris-Roubaix for men and women, the final stage of the Giro d'Italia - Milan, and the Queen stage of the Vuelta a España - Tourmalet summit taking place on the same day!
This calendar will be held on the same day.
This calendar clash has been dubbed cycling's Super Sunday, reminiscent of the name given to matchdays when major soccer matches are held in the afternoon on the same day.
Each race offers something special.
The final stage of the Giro d'Italia, a 16.5 km individual time trial to the center of Milan, will determine the winner of this year's Maglia Rosa, although in 2017 Tom Dumoulin took the overall win from Vincenzo Nibali and Nairo Quintana in Milan, A similar scenario is possible this year. The time trial will take place 24 hours after the mountain stage, which climbs the Colle Dell'Aniello and Col d'Isole and finishes in Sestriere.
Although no Paris-Roubaix has been hit by rain since 2002, local meteorologists predict that rain is likely in the northern hell on October 25. The addition of the first-ever women's Paris-Roubaix will also bring more attention to the cobblestone farm track in northern France, making it a historic day for women's cycling.
The Vuelta a España is the last Grand Tour of the post-COVID-19 closed season, overlapping the Giro d'Italia by six days, starting in the Basque Country on Tuesday, October 20 and ending in Madrid on Sunday, November 8 after 18 stages, bringing the 2020 Men's The World Tour comes to a close. Stage 6 will feature a mountain finish at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees.
The cyclo-cross race Zonhoven Superprestige is also scheduled for October 25, potentially condensing five major races into one day, unless the Belgian event decides to reschedule to avoid race congestion.
There are always several overlapping races in cycling, but nothing like this Super Sunday. Fans will have a difficult choice of which races to watch live, and if they want to watch and follow all of the races, they should be prepared to spend most of the day on the couch.
Race organizers may opt to change the race schedule to avoid having all races end at the same time on Sunday afternoon, but after wrangling over the race schedule, no agreement has yet been reached.
However, it could turn out to be a big, day-long race. The Vuelta a España stage is only 135 km long and could be held in the morning. Meanwhile, the Giro d'Italia time trial could end at noon, leaving the afternoon for the men's and women's Paris-Roubaix.
