According to various reports in the Dutch and Belgian media, 39-year-old Pieter Weening will sign a contract with World Tour team Trek-Segafredo for the remainder of the 2020 season. The Dutchman has been without a team since the end of the 2019 season, as his Loompott-Charles team closed at the end of the year.
The former Tour de France stage winner (and two-time Giro d'Italia stage winner) has been a professional since 2004 and was a member of the Rabobank team all the way until 2012, when he joined the Australian WorldTour team Orica-GreenEdge He joined Roompot in 2016 and merged with Willems Creran in Veranda for his final season in 2019.
The Dutch website Wielerflits.nl reported on Sunday that several sources confirmed the rumor, saying that Weening has already been seen training in the Netherlands in his new kit, but no deal has been signed yet. The Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad went a step further and reported on Sunday that Weening had already signed a contract with a World Tour team.
Weening, who just last season won a stage at the Tour of Luxembourg, will use his experience to serve as a mentor at Trek-Segafredo, which has many promising young riders, especially road race world champion Mads Pedersen, last year's Giro d'Italia "king of the mountains" Giulio Ciccone, and junior road race world champion Quinn Simmons (24, 25, and 19 years old, respectively) will benefit from Weening's experience and advice. The team also has older leaders such as 35-year-old Richie Porte, 35-year-old Vincenzo Nibali, and 33-year-old Bauke Mollema.
Trek Segafredo has yet to announce a deal with Weening.
