Belgian Championships postponed until after the New Year.

According to Belgian media reports, the Belgian road national championships will not be held in the European national event slot proposed by the UCI, which ends on the weekend of August 22 and 23. The government has stated that large gatherings are still not allowed in Belgium in August, and the national federations are therefore looking for a date to hold the championships later in the year.

The Italian Federation has already asked the UCI to postpone the Championships until the end of October, and the French Federation is considering a similar date. The German and Dutch championships have already been cancelled altogether and will be skipped a year and held as usual in 2021.

On Wednesday, Het Laatste Nieuws carried comments from Tom Van Damme, president of the Belgian Cycling Federation: "There will be no Belgian championships in August.

He added: "It has been decided [by the government] that there will be no mass events until the end of August. We should look for another date in the next few weeks."

"I am not sure if the Belgian Championships will take place in August, but I am not sure.

"I am convinced that the Belgian Championships will take place this year. I don't understand why the Tour of Flanders and the Tour of France will be held but not the Belgian Championships. We have discussed several options with the organizers.

One possibility might be the end of September.

"If the World Championships are not held in Switzerland at the end of September (20-27), then there would be an opening in the calendar. That is a possible option, but there are many options," Belgian Federation director Jos Smets told Het Nieuwsblad, referring to the uncertainty surrounding the World Championships and the possibility of moving from Europe to the Middle East in November.

"There are several options, but I cannot elaborate. We have agreed with both municipalities to consider these options and make a final decision on Friday," Van Dam said, adding that Coxaide will host the time trial and Anzegem will host the road race.

"Realistically speaking, the championships may not take place at all, but that is not for lack of trying. If public health and safety are respected, we will do everything we can to ensure that the championships take place."
