Esteban Chaves said he dreams of winning the Tour de France, but has yet to finalize his race program for the 2020 season. The Colombian has mainly competed in the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a EspaƱa in his career, with only one Tour appearance in 2017, when he finished 62nd overall.
"I fell in love with cycling after watching the Tour de France when I was 12. The Tour de France was the race that captivated me," Chaves told Spanish podcast El Maillot (opens in new tab). I have a dream, and that is to win the Tour de France. I work with that goal in mind. If someone asks me if I can win the Tour, I'll say yes."
The team's team is also looking to win the Tour de France.
In 2016, Chaves finished second overall in the Giro (losing the maglia rosa to Vincenzo Nibali on the final day) and third in the Vuelta, but since then he has struggled to climb such heights as an overall class contender; his 2018 season was ruined by mononucleosis But he won a stage at the Giro that year and added another win in 2019.
"My stage win at the last Giro d'Italia confirmed that I am completely healthy," Chaves said." I think back now about the symptoms I had, I've had the disease since 2017, it developed in 2018, I've had the disease since 2017, I've had the disease since 2017, I've had the disease since 2018. I was tested and diagnosed."
Chaves' Mitchelton-Scott team will be rebranded as Team Manuela Fondation before the season resumes in mid-summer, but the 30-year-old has not yet decided on a race program. He finished seventh overall at the Tour Colombia in February but has yet to race in Europe in 2020 after a coronavirus pandemic interrupted his season in March.
"My goals for the season are not set yet, but I would like to compete in a big stage race. During the early stages of the lockdown, Chaves and his fellow pro riders in Colombia were unable to train outdoors.
"We have the ability to adapt to change. It's important to take it one day at a time and try to be as smart as possible when things return to normal.
