Bosch has announced new features for the 2021 model year. Major updates include increased functionality and connectivity of the Nyon and Kiox on-board computers, as well as several new navigation features that will significantly enhance the e-bike rider's experience, whether commuting, riding for fun, or hauling cargo around town.
Alongside these new computers, Bosch also announced a new variant of the eShift concept and software updates for the Performance and Cargo Line motors.
Bosch has completely redesigned the head unit of the Nyon computer, making it easier to use and bringing its overall functionality up to date.
The new form factor features a 3.2-inch high-resolution color display with a coating that reduces glare and fingerprints. To improve readability in variable light conditions, the display features a backlight that automatically adjusts to ambient light. Bosch claims that the touchscreen is easy to operate, even in dusty or humid conditions or when wearing gloves. Rather than relying solely on the touchscreen, Nyon uses an independent control unit.
Navigation is now fully integrated using open street maps, which Bosch was able to integrate some excellent features. Navigation to destinations can be done using the touch screen to select a destination or by choosing from recent or saved destinations. Routes and bike tours can also be created and loaded into Nyon using the eBike Connect online app integrated with Outdoor Active and Komoot Nyon has also removed the unknown from battery life. It smartly combines terrain information with battery life to accurately estimate range.
New maps and software updates can be downloaded and installed via Wifi, routes and ride data can be synced using the eBike Connect online app, and user settings can be changed.
Nyon can track a variety of fitness data, collecting speed, power, and cadence from the motor and connecting to a heart rate monitor. Riders can track fitness and calories burned and set fitness goals. Graphic displays in smartphone apps and web portals can analyze performance, and Nyon can also connect to fitness apps such as Strava and Komoot In addition to Outdooractive, Komoot, and Strava, Nyon also includes Apple Health and Google Fit, Spotify, and Audible.
The new computer will be available in late September 2020 and can be retrofitted to any bike with a MY 2014 motor.
The Kiox computer is not receiving a hardware update, but a free software update scheduled for mid to late July 2020 will bring some major feature improvements.
The update introduces navigation to Kiox, and while there is no built-in mapping like in Nyon, the breadcrumb trail-style navigation on the screen will show riders a blue line. The screen also shows the direction the rider is facing to aid navigation.
Routes and navigation can be configured through the eBike Connect online app, and riders also have access to Outdooractive and Komoot route and touring options.
Kiox records ride data and displays fitness metrics on screen in real time.
