The 2020 Pan American Cyclocross Championships, scheduled for November 8-9 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. Organizers made the announcement Tuesday, but vowed to hold the UCI-sanctioned Fayette Cross on October 2-3, 2021.
"The decision to cancel was made for the health of the athletes, spectators, and the entire Northwest Arkansas community," race director Brooke Watts said in a press release.
"The good news is that we have committed to hosting Fayette Cross on October 2-3 in 2021, giving you a peek at the 2022 World Championship course at Centennial Park."
According to a press release, the Pan American Cycling Federation has opted not to reschedule the 2020 Pan American Cyclocross Championships.
The UCI confirmed last February that it had chosen Fayetteville to host the 2022 Cyclocross World Championships. This marks the return of the event to American soil after Louisville, Kentucky hosted the cyclocross world championships in 2013.
It was later announced that the 2020 Pan American Championships would be held at the same venue, with the intention of giving racers the opportunity to preview the World Championship course at Centennial Park on Millsap Mountain in Fayetteville.
Fayette Cross was held last season as a C2 sanctioned race, and organizers have confirmed that they will seek UCI sanctioning for another race at the same venue in 2021.
"Fayette Cross 2021 is an international event held at Centennial Park in Fayetteville, which is also the site of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Cyclocross World Championships on January 29-30, 2022," organizers confirmed in a press release.
Defending champions Kelly Warner (Kona) and Magali Rochette (Specialized - Feedback Sports) won the title at the 2019 Pan American Cyclocross Championships in Midland, Canada, and will He will hold the title until next year.
Trek also announced in July that the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Waterloo had been cancelled due to risks associated with the COVID-19 coronavirus and committed to return in 2021.
The gravel racing scene has also suffered several cancellations this year. Most memorably, organizers of the Old Growth Classic, a popular gravel race held at Big Basin State Park, announced its cancellation. The nonprofit Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz sponsors the event each year and donates to MBOSC and California State Parks. They are launching a fundraiser (open in new tab) to repair roads and build new trails in Big Basin.
