How Local Legends are Made on Strava

Strava's new "Local Legends" feature adds an innovative way for users to interact with the activity app, making it available to more riders.

Whereas previously earning KOMs on climbs and descents was based on indifference to fitness and risk, the Local Legends hierarchy rewards participation and consistency.

This feature, which crowns Local Legend the athlete who completes the most segments within 90 days, is cleverly integrated into Strava's overall user interface and provides intuitive navigation. Note that only activities that are "visible" to everyone will count toward the Local Legend achievement.

To give users an idea of the consistency needed to be a competitive Local Legend candidate, Strava has released interesting data across the UK segment over the past 90 days.

The most popular segment on Strava is "Kingston to Bushy" with 80,201 rides recorded. Most logged by a single cyclist: 97.

The second most logged segment in the UK, also in the London area, is 'Heaven is a place on earth' with a total of 55,717 rides and a peak effort of 83 per rider.

Perhaps, one of Strava's most valuable segments in the UK ride world is the famous 'Box Hill' climb in Surrey. It has been ridden over 37,000 times in the past three months. To become a "Box Hill" rider with Local Legend status requires over 80 efforts in 90 days.

In the Southwest, 'Over Bridge to Aston [sic] Court' in Bristol is the most ridden, with 28,368 rides. In Wales, Cardiff and Swansea are in a close race, with the latter's County Hall to Cenotaph [sic] the most ridden, 11,843 times, or 67 times by a single cyclist.

In the north, Askwith Ln to Denton Rd in Yorkshire is the busiest section, with 13,833 rides, 44 of them by a single rider. Further north, Edinburgh roundabout to roundabout took the Scottish crown with 29,925 participants. One rider recorded 197 rides. The most ridden section in Northern Ireland was from Comber to Belfast and back, with 6,800 rides on this section, 53 of which were by the same rider.

For riders with special discipline in their training and cycling routines, the Local Legend feature gives them the opportunity to achieve Strava status without overworking their bodies.

After Strava first released the Local Legend update in the US, it is now live in France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Brazil, and the UK.
