Two days after a crash in Strade Bianche forced him to abandon his return to competition early, Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo) returned to the Gran Trittico Lombardo on Monday after it was confirmed that he had no broken bones from the crash.
Nibali injured his left hand in a crash with 70km to go in Strade Bianche and abandoned the race shortly thereafter. After an hour and a half of training on Sunday morning, Nibali was later diagnosed with the injury at the J Medical Center of the Juventus Football Club at the Allianz Stadium in Turin and was cleared to compete in the Gran Trittico Lombardo.
"Unfortunately, as can happen in racing, everything worked out in the end," Nibali told reporters at the start of the Gran Trittico Lombardo in Legnano.
The Gran Trittico Lombardo is a new race added to the revised UCI calendar, replacing Tre Valli Varesine, Coppa Bernocchi, and Coppa Agostoni for this year only, with the schedule changed due to the COVID-19 craze.
The race combines elements of all three events that make up the Trittico Lombardo, finishing at the same Varese circuit that traditionally finishes in the Tre Valli Varesine finale.
In 2015, Nibali lost the Coppa Agostoni sprint to Davide Rebellin and came close to completing his hat trick in this event by winning the Coppa Bernocchi and the Tre Valli Varesine. Nibali will run on Monday with the Trek Segafredo team, which includes Giulio Ciccone and Gianluca Brambilla.
"Let's see what happens today. I'm sure I'll have a good race and we'll see what my condition is like during the race," Nibali said. I'm a little unsure. Strade Bianche was a hard race, but today is a different type of race, a different route.
The Sicilian rider will ride Milan-Torino and Milan-San Remo before racing Gran Piemonte and Il Lombardia next week. The World Championships in Martigny and the Giro d'Italia, scheduled for October, are Nibali's main targets when he changes his calendar.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Nibali's coach, Paolo Slongo, said of the crash that ended his challenge in Strade Bianche.
"It was in the seventh sector of the dirt. Vincenzo took his hand off the bar to get a drink before the final climb. He lost his balance on the curve and someone landed on top of him."
