Team Ineos Excludes Player from Italian Championships after Leonardo Basso Tests Positive for COVID-19

Team Ineos has cancelled its participation in Sunday's Italian national championship road race after Leonardo Basso tested positive for COVID-19.

Basso tested positive on Saturday but has not shown any symptoms.

Gianni Moscon, Filippo Ganna, and Salvatore Puccio trained with Basso earlier this week, but as a precautionary measure, have withdrawn from Sunday's race, along with four staff members.

In a statement released Saturday, Team Ineos explained that Basso tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday, but tested positive on Saturday despite training mostly alone and staying home ahead of the national championship.

Ganna won the Italian time trial title on Friday afternoon following a morning recon with Basso. He and Puccio were scheduled to support Moscon in Sunday's road race, but will not be able to race for 14 days.

Neither of them were in Ineos' plans for the Tour de France, but they will not be able to race in the Settimana Coppi e Bartali the first week of September. Nevertheless, they will be able to make it to Tirreno - Adriatico on September 7.

Basso is the latest in a string of COVID-19 positives in recent days. Larry Warbus (AG2R La Mondiale) tested positive on Friday, and Inge van der Heijden withdrew from the Dutch national road race on Saturday. The Tour de France starts next Saturday, and any team that reports two positive cases during the bubble period will be banned from the race.

"Team Ineos today withdrew a rider from the Italian national championships as a precautionary measure in line with Covid protocols after Leonardo Basso tested positive. He remains asymptomatic," the company said in a statement.

"Except for a knee treatment at a local medical center eight days ago, Leonardo has been at home in Asolo with his girlfriend and has been training alone for the last ten days.

"Tuesday's tests came back negative. He has remained at home and has not joined the team's hotel for the past few days. However, yesterday he did a time trial recall with Filippo Ganna and this morning he did a training ride with him, Salvatore Puccio and Gianni Moscon. In accordance with protocol, all four riders will be quarantined for 14 days.

"The four staff members are also considered secondary contacts and will be quarantined. They are in contact with the riders wearing masks, keeping their social distance and other protocols, but the team believes this is a prudent precaution. The team will also assist in tracking any contact Leos may have with friends and family for some time to come.
