Morema's Season Ends with Tour de France Crash

Trek-Segafredo has largely ruled out a return to action this season after Tour de France co-leader Bauke Mollema crashed on stage 13.

Mollema, of the Netherlands, crashed with about 86 km to go on Friday, rolling Romain Bardet. Bardet continued the race, but after a post-stage examination at the hospital, it was discovered that he had suffered a concussion and was withdrawn from the race.

Meanwhile, Mollema went straight to the hospital, where he underwent X-rays and was diagnosed with a broken left wrist; the 33-year-old was in 13th place overall before his crash.

"Bauquet had surgery last night and it went well," Trek-Segafredo confirmed Saturday morning before stage 14. [Technically it was perfect. Both the surgeon and the team doctor were very happy with the result. Bauquet will return home today to continue his recovery."

Mollema suffered a "complex fracture of the left wrist: fracture of the radius and ulna, fracture of the navicular bone" and also received five stitches due to an injury to his lower lip.

Normally, a crash at the Tour de France and a six-week rest would allow him to return to racing at the end of the season, but this year the calendar was rewritten due to COVID-19 and the Tour was moved from late August to September, so Morema's season is likely to be over.

"The expected recovery time is six weeks, but it is unlikely that Bauquet will race again this season," the team added.

Morema came into the Tour de France in consistent form. He finished fourth to defend his Il Lombardia title and had two top-10 finishes in the two stage races before the Grande Pearl.

Losing Mollema is a major blow to Trek-Segafredo's Tour de France ambitions, but they still have Richie Porte at the top of the overall ranking. The 35-year-old had a great mountaintop finish on stage 13 to move up from 11th to ninth on GC. The Australian will leave the team at the end of the year, and Ineos Grenadier is the favourite to move on.
