Savio Finalizes 2021 Roster, but No Place for Fabio Aru

Gianni Savio confirmed that his team will consist of 20 riders in 2021, but that there is no room for the former Vuelta a España winner, although discussions with Fabio Aru have taken place. Savio has not yet decided on the exact composition of the main sponsor, but presented Saidermec as the team name in the documents sent to the UCI. Sidermec could become the main sponsor next year, but Savio acknowledged that Androni and two other companies are still in negotiations for the position of main sponsor In 2020, the team will race as Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec.

"For now we are only presenting as Sidermec, but we are in talks with Androni and two other sponsors and will finalize the decision by November 15. For now the team is Sidermec, but the first space on the jersey is free. We may finalize it with Androni, Saidelmec may become the title sponsor, or it may be another sponsor. We are discussing everything right now," Savio told Cycling News.

Savio's deal with Aru came after it was widely acknowledged that the Italian rider would not be offered a contract extension at UAE Team Emirates.

There were rumors of Aru with a number of teams, including Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso's new project, but Basso told the Italian press last week that he would not move for Aru.

"We want to continue our philosophy of presenting everything to the UCI and using young riders. Next year we will have 20 riders on the team and we will announce some next week, but Fabio Aru will not be joining us. We talked to him but it was impossible without finding a big sponsor, we have the budget for a team of 20 young riders and they are good, but we definitely don't have the budget to have a leader like Fabio Aru. Savio told Cycling News, "I don't know where he's going, but we talked about it about a month ago.

Savio also confirmed that all eight riders who competed in the 2020 Giro d'Italia will be with the team next season, but also made it clear that the focus will be on developing young talent. Savio has acquired the highly regarded Jiga Yerman from Grupama's development team, while Jefferson Alexander Cepeda has signed a contract for the next three seasons.

"My expectations are for the young players. Not only do we have the experience of Simon Perrault, but we have also signed Jiga Yerman, who won the 2018 U23 Ghent-Wevelgem. He is very good and was previously on the same team as Tadei Pogacar. In the next few days we will also be announcing a young Colombian rider, but I can't give any details about him yet; on November 15 we will announce three more riders, but at this point we can't announce them because not all of them are signed yet. I can say that all the riders who rode this year's Giro d'Italia with us will ride with us again in 2021."
