Total Direct Energy has acquired British rider Chris Lawless from Ineos Grenadiers and NTT Pro Cycling to strengthen the French pro team's sprint, classics, and Grand Tour units for 2021. Edvald Boasson Hagen have been acquired.
Lilian Carmejane will move to AG2R-Citroën, while team manager Jean-Rene Bernadeau has acquired Pierre Latour, Alexandre Jenyes, and Alexis Vuillermoz from rival French teams, and will be at the pro team level While staying put, they are attempting to increase their presence in the Total Direct Energi peloton and compete with the larger World Tour teams.
Total Direct Energi also acquired Victor de la Parte from the CCC team and fellow Spaniard Cristian Rodriguez from Caja Rural. Niki Terpstra will remain as leader of the Classics. The addition of Lawless and Boasson Hagen further strengthens the Classics team, while Niccolo Bonifazio remains as the team's lead sprinter.
The addition of Boasson Hagen comes in the wake of sponsorship issues at NTT Pro Cycling, where the 33-year-old Norwegian has won three stages in the Tour de France, and during his career with Team Columbia, Team Sky, and NTT, has won the Ghent-Wevelgem and Vattenfall Cyclassics, and has won a total of 81 races. In this year's Tour de France, he finished second behind Wout Van Aert in the sprint to Lavol on stage 7.
"My goal is to win as much as possible, race hard, and get the best result," Boassonhagen said.
"I am a versatile rider and I want to win the spring classics and get a chance to win a stage in the Tour de France. I can't wait to join the team and meet everyone at training camp. Hopefully I can have a normal season next year.
Lawless joined from Ineos Grenadiers despite having a contract with the British team until 2021.The 25-year-old British puncher-sprinter won the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and finished third in the 2019 Scheldepri. However, he will be allowed to move on and be given more opportunities.
"It's a bit of a leap into the unknown because I've always been on an English-speaking team with teammates I know well. I can't wait to take on this new challenge and see what this team can do for me," Lawless said.
"I want to improve in the classics. Being with Niki Terpstra will help me learn more and I can always aim higher. I don't know exactly what my role will be yet, but I have a lot to learn from other players' experiences. I think I have a chance to win even more on my own."
Total Direct Energies will have to fight for wildcards to the Tour de France and the World Tour Classics, but Bernot has the backing of his sponsors and is confident of a full program of major races in 2021 It appears that.
"Thanks to Total's support, the Total Direct Energies team has completed an ambitious recruitment campaign that mixes youth and experience," said Bernode.
"In addition to a group of climbers led by Pierre Latour, Alexandre Jenyes, and Fabien Dubay, we have Spanish riders Victor de la Parte and Cristian Rodriguez. With Niki Terpstra and Anthony Turgis, and Niccolo Bonifazio sprinting, the classics are well prepared.
Bernaudeau hinted that news about Boasson Hagen would be coming.
"I still want to add a fast finisher, a road captain. We're thinking about who to go with. By Friday we'll have a decision on this year's hire."
