Cyclocross World Cup, Shirin van Anlooy taken to hospital after fall in Tábor

Shirin van Anlooy was taken to the hospital with injuries from a crash in the elite women's race of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Tabor on Sunday. The junior world champion injured her arm and will undergo surgery to correct the damage caused by a piece of disc brake debris, her team Telenet Baloise Lions said.

"Shirin Van Unrooy injured her forearm from a piece of disc brake debris in a crash just after the start. She will undergo surgery this evening. At this time there does not appear to be any significant muscle or tendon damage," the team posted on Twitter.

After the crash, her Telenet Baloise Lions manager, Sven Nys, said van Anlooy was conscious but suffered injuries to her arm and lower back.

"She's conscious, but I've never seen wounds like this," Nys told a report from Wielerflits (open in new tab). 'She has open wounds and fractures. Her back was not in good condition. She also lost a lot of blood. [Now] she is in the hospital with her mother. You don't want to go through something like this. Sadly, she saw the wound herself. It is truly awful."

The crash occurred at the start of the women's elite race and involved several competitors, including Rose Sells and Katie Compton

. 'It was very strange,' Sells told Wielerflits. "They hooked up together and I ended up on top of [the crash]. That blocked my back and I ended up in the first round. I don't think I've ever had a crash that hard happen in a cross before."

Juan Anroy won the junior world title at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Dübendorf, Switzerland, in February. He is also set to compete in the 2021 road racing season with Trek-Segafredo as a neo-pro.

In Tabor, Juan Anroy's teammate Lucinda Brand won the elite women's race, finishing second, 24 seconds behind world champion Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin Phoenix) and Denise Betsema ( Pauwels Sausen Bingor) rounded out the all-Dutch podium by 32 seconds.
