Marianne Bos is one of the most talented and accomplished cyclists of all time. She is a three-time world champion on the road, a 28-stage winner of the women's Giro d'Italia, three-time overall winner of the same race, two-time winner of the Olympic road race, La Course, and host of the Spring Classics.
She has won the Rainbow Stripes seven times in cyclocross and a gold medal in track. As such, she will lead the new Jumbo-Visma women's team from CCC-Liv.
As a result of her move, Vos' obligation to ride a CCC-Liv team bike also ended when 2020 ended. In cyclocross, it was a GIANT TCX. Her new team will ride Cervélo bikes in 2021, as will Wout Van Aert and the other men's Jumbo Visma team.
But instead of switching to a Cervélo, Vos switched from a Giant TCX to a Bianchi Zolder, repainted in Jumbo Visma colors to hide the Bianchi logo. But why?
We asked Jumbo Visma for information.
As is reasonably well known at this point, Cervelo does not make cross bikes, and as a result, Voss was given a choice of which bike to ride.
One would have thought she would have taken a similar approach to Van Art, riding a repainted version of the familiar TCX, removing the Giant logo and closing the campaign on the familiar bike, but that was not to be.
Despite her status in the sport, even Voss is not immune to the mechanics of sponsorship models. Despite being in the middle of a cross campaign, she had to return her Giant and Liv bikes at the end of the year. As a result, her only option was to repaint a second Bianchi bike for Voss alongside the Fun Art bike.
According to a Cervélo spokesman, it was "a fairly inevitable start to the partnership."
Fortunately, Voss will not be limited to the repainted Bianchi for the entire duration of the Jumbo Visma; CyclingTips (opens in new tab) recently confirmed that a new Cervélo cyclocross model is on the way, and that Tom Dumoulin will be riding the brand s other new road bike, and revealed that images of him riding what appears to be a new road bike have been circulating on social media. Due to the coincidental timing, Cycling News predicts that the two new bikes may be related.
We reached out to Cervélo for comment, but were unable to share any information at this stage, so the typical marketing response was: "Our athlete and ambassador partners are committed to providing riders with the best performance bikes and riding experiences Our athlete and ambassador partners are an integral part of our research and development process as we seek to provide riders with the best performance bikes and ride experiences.
While we have no real leads, we can only be sure that there are plenty of plans at the Cervélo headquarters, but we'll be keeping our eyes peeled to see if the Jumbo Visma team develops any technology we haven't seen before.
