The group, which included Schillinger, Wilco Kelderman, RĂ¼diger Selig, Markus Burghardt, Anton Palzer, Maximilian Schachmann, and Michael Schwarzmann, were approaching their hotel after the last 30+ minutes of training when a silver SUV apparently crossed their path and did not respect their right of way.

Ide Schelling was out training with seven teammates and left the group early to return to the hotel. He confirmed the news of the incident in a Strava post.

"But it was the worst end of camp. The group collided with a car and everyone crashed.

"I was the only one who decided not to extend the 30 minutes, so I have a little safe angel on my shoulder. I hope everyone is safe.

He later elaborated on what he heard to Dutch broadcaster NOS

.

"Nobody really saw it except the boys. We knew immediately that it was not a small accident, but a serious one. If you're driving at 30-40 km/h on a flat road and a car hits you at a reasonable speed, it's not nothing."

"I was driving at a speed of 30-40 km/h on a flat road and a car hits me at a reasonable speed, it's not nothing.

Peter Sagan and other team members were not involved after training with another group. Sagan and several teammates will travel to Gran Canaria today as planned to continue their pre-season training.

Kelderman had just moved from Sunweb, where he finished third in last year's Giro d'Italia and had announced his intention to challenge for the Tour de France.

The 29-year-old was scheduled to start his campaign in Italy before the start of the season to meet his new teammates. Schillinger has been with the team since its NetApp days, and the 37-year-old is one of its most experienced riders.
