Sweck and Betsema close out cyclocross season with solo victories in Oostmalle

The cyclocross season came to a close over the weekend at the Internationale Sluitingsprijs Oostmalle in Belgium, with Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal riders Denise Bessema and Laurens Sweek taking their final wins of the season. The cyclo-cross season came to a close with the final victory of the season.

Sweek held off Quinten Hermans and Lars van der Haar in the elite men's race, finishing first after a long solo run to take his fifth win of the season. The race did not get off to the best of starts for the Belgian rider. Initially, he watched the trio of Toon Arts, Hermans, and David van der Haar ride off the front, but Sweck caught the pack and quickly went off on his own.

"I felt I had very good legs, so I pushed right away. It didn't work out yesterday in Sint-Niklaas. I didn't have power in my legs and I wasn't flashy. Today I had all of that. This kind of circuit suits me, so I don't have to wait," said Sweck.

Sweck finished fifth in Saturday's race in Sint-Niklaas, a race won by teammate Eli Iserbyt, but he came away with a clear victory in Sunday's race. Sweck finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of Hermans. Hermans will now head to training camp for the Ardennes Classic.

In the women's elite race, Betsema took her eighth win of the season and second of the weekend in Oostmalle. The race started with a breakaway of Betsema, three-time world champion Sanne Kant, and Inge van der Heyden. The trio was joined by Annemarie Werst and Aniek van Alphen, with Betsema and Canto eventually escaping.

Then, as the race approached the halfway point, Betsema began to close the gap and the Dutch rider had time to celebrate his final victory of the season. Canto held on to second place, with Inge van der Heijden in third.
