Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) will miss Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The Amstel Gold Race runner-up crashed in La Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday, and although he finished sixth, he did not make it to the Monument on Sunday.
"Bad news for fans - he will miss #LBL as he is still feeling the effects of his crash at La Flèche on Wednesday. Good news - he is rested and will be ready for the first MTB race of the season next weekend in Switzerland," the team announced on Twitter.
Eddie Dunbar has been added to the Ineos team for Sunday's race, confirming a lineup of Richard Kalapas, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Michal Golas, Michal Kwiatkowski, Luke Rowe, Adam Yates, and Dunbar.
Pidcock has had a remarkable spring since entering the World Tour early in the season. He finished third in the Coulée-Brussels-Coulée and fifth in the Strade Bianche. In the Amstel Gold Race, he narrowly lost out to Van Aert, and the two finished in a close photo finish.
"Without Liège, I can devote more time to recovery and mountain bike preparation," Pidcock's coach, Kurt Bogaerts, told Cycling News early in the season. Pidcock's coach, Kurt Bogaerts, told Cyclingnews early in the season, "We'll have a lot of time to recover and prepare for mountain biking.
With the loss of Pidcock, Ineos Grenadier lost one of his potential leaders, but Kwiatkowski, a former world champion, has improved in recent weeks, finishing eighth in Amstel Gold and 23rd in La Fleche Wallonne.
"I'm excited. It was super difficult to get into the Ardennes this year with a broken rib, but I honestly feel great," Kwiatkowski said before Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
"We took a different approach going into this period with the high altitude camp. I felt great in Amstel and Flèche and the team performed great. Tom almost won in Amstel, and I was really happy to be able to enjoy these two races with my teammates."
"I'm very happy to have been able to race with my teammates."
"I'm very happy to have been able to race with them.
"The last couple of years I have felt a bit alone as a leader. It's been great."
"I believe that in the classical world you should always have a few cards up your sleeve. We can support each other and Amsterdam was a good example. If Grenadier is at the front of the pack, at the front, we are happy. That is our goal. Let's celebrate together."
