The unbound gravel (open in new tab) field is bound to be varied, but one rider is sure to stand out: 88-year-old Frederick Schmidt.
Despite his advanced age, the Texan will be riding a distinctive 200-mile route this weekend.
While experienced gravel racers like Pete Stetina (open in new tab) and former World Tour pros vie for victory up front, he just wants to finish.
"Physically, I feel I can get through this time and distance," Schmid said. [Last year, when the event was cancelled due to the pandemic, he ran the 200 miles in under 17 hours.
Nevertheless, he is aware that he may struggle to meet the time limit at two checkpoints, the first at Alma at mile 69 and the second at Council Grove at mile 156.
"I don't want to give up. If they cut [my time], I'm going to keep running," he insisted.
"I'm going to run the 200 miles anyway. I'm going to maintain 11 mph. I'm just going to climb that damn hill."
Schmidt only started cycling in his 6s, but has since carved out an illustrious career as a masters racer.
He has over 30 national titles and two world titles, but will be out this weekend to soak up the camaraderie of the event.
"I'm not a competitor, I just ride bikes," he said.
"When I race, I just do what I can do. I don't want to beat people, I just want to have a good ride."
