Yolanda Neff (Trek Factory Racing) finished fourth in the Leogang World Cup cross-country mountain bike race despite breaking her hand in a hard fall at the end of the second last lap.
Neff was behind race leader and eventual winner Roana Lecomte (Massi), with Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Absolute Absalon-BMC), Laura Stiger (Specialized), and Jenny Lisvedos (Sweden) forming the lead group on the fourth of five laps. They were. After a tilted 2020, Neff appeared to be heading back toward the form and results she was producing before being interrupted by a big crash at the end of 2019. The previous day's short track race in Leogang was her first World Cup podium finish.
However, after removing the panning from Neff, who was second at the time, and briefly focusing on the other group in the race, the camera returned to the Swiss rider being passed by Stiger, who was soon passed by Ferran Prevot. Ferran Prevot, 28, who earlier had appeared to be running in second place, showed clear signs of having dropped out, with a dirty kit and no glasses.
"I think I broke my hand, but other than that I'm fine. I had a pretty big crash, though it didn't show up on the camera. But I managed to keep going."
Lisbeth passed Neff to take second place, while Stiger held on to third. Meanwhile, the Swiss rider once again caught up to and overtook world champion Ferran Prevot, despite the crash.
"I finished fourth and my legs felt a lot better," said Stiger. I'm very happy with my race."
However, it is not clear what impact the crash had on the Swiss champion.
She, along with Chyna Fry and Linda Indergan, has been selected to represent Switzerland at the Olympics in the women's mountain bike cross-country. Neff competed in both the mountain bike and road race in Rio, finishing sixth and eighth, while Marlen Reusser was selected for one of the women's slots in the road race and time trial in Tokyo.
As a result, Neff's focus turned to mountain biking on July 27, with the 2017 world champion seemingly back on form just in time. And before that, another World Cup is on the horizon, with the XCO race on July 4 in Les Gets, France: "We will keep you posted on how this one goes and how we will continue." But for now, I am safe and thank you for all the messages."
