BMX racer crashes into officials entering the Tokyo Olympics course.

The Dutch cycling team for the Tokyo Olympics has been hit by a new incident. Former BMX world champion Niek Kimman collided with an individual during a practice run on the course at Ariake Urban Sports Park.

25-year-old Neek Kimman exited a banked corner on the second straightaway of the course in Tokyo and rode at full speed through a series of alternating jumps. The person was identified as an official in Kimman's social media post.

Both the person involved and Kimman hit the pavement hard, with Kimman getting up first and returning to check on the person involved. Kimman said on Instagram that he had knee pain a few hours after the collision, but that he would be ready for the first round of competition on Thursday.

"This happened today. I bumped into an official who was trying to cross the second straight. My knee hurts, but I'll do my best to make it in time for Thursday! Thanks to everyone who messaged me!" Kimman's Instagram post, which was accompanied by a video of the incident.

On Sunday, Dutch mountain bike team member Mathieu van der Pol crashed out of contention in the cross-country race at the Tokyo Olympics. Van der Pol, one of the riders expected to win a medal, fell on a rocky descent on a wooden plank during a preliminary inspection of the course and injured his hip.

This year marks the fourth Olympic medal in BMX racing, having first been awarded at the 2008 Beijing Games. Kimman will be part of a three-member men's Dutch team that includes current UCI world champion Twan van Gendt and Joris Harmsen, who won the 2015 world title in the time trial event.

Kinman won the BMX world title in Zolder in 2015 at age 19 and finished seventh in Rio a year later. Most recently, he won the 2019 European Championships and BMX Supercross World Cup titles. He is currently ranked third in the UCI BMX Men's Elite Ranking.

The BMX quarterfinals will be held on Thursday, July 29, with the semifinals and medal round on Friday at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo.
